UNCLEAN: Is Urban Trauma the New Leprosy?
Sponsored by MASS HUMANITIES and the MASS CULTURAL COUNCIL – BOSTON UNIVERSITY’S RACE, PRISON, JUSTICE ARTS AND VOICES 21C, in collaboration with EXPLANATIONS FROM EXILE proudly present "UNCLEAN: Is Urban Trauma The New Leprosy?" This innovative multi-disciplinary narrative project delves into the historical and contemporary parallels between the treatment of lepers in centuries past, and the present day treatment of urban trauma survivors.

Contemporary stories from urban trauma survivors incarcerated for violent infractions will center society’s continued reliance on incarceration to address deadly comorbid symptoms found in under-resourced communities – specifically communities of color. Juxtaposing these time periods will highlight the way that skin presentation, specifically, has unduly determined the fate of afflicted community members across time.

The UNCLEAN presentations and discussions will take place at two locations: May 2 at the Boston University College of Fine Arts from 6-9pm; May 28 at The State House (Hall of Flags) from 12:30-3:30. These events are FREE TO THE PUBLIC.
